上堂云：「若論此事，如人博戲相似，忽然贏得，身心歡喜，家業昌盛，覆陰兒孫；不覺輸他，自然迷悶。然雖有輸有贏，此事還在。白雲今日有條攀條、無條攀例，不見陸亘大夫與南泉看雙陸次，大夫撮起骰子問南泉云：『恁麼不恁麼，便恁麼信彩去時如何？』南泉云：『臭骨頭十八。』大眾！此去縣城不遠，外人聞得便來捉賭時又且如何？」乃云：「白雲自有道理。記得龍牙道：『學道先須有悟由，還如曾鬪快龍舟，雖然舊閣閑田地，一度贏來方始休。』」

Ascending the hall, he said, "Discussing this matter is like a person gambling: if suddenly he wins, body and mind rejoice, his family business flourishes, sheltering his children and grandchildren; if inadvertently he loses to the other, he is naturally bewildered and distressed. Even though there is losing and winning, this matter is still present. Today Baiyun, if there is a rule, follows the rule; if there is no rule, follows precedent. Have you not seen: When Prefect Lu Gen was watching double-sixes with Nanquan, the prefect gathered up the dice and asked Nanquan, 'Like this or not like this—when trusting to luck just like this, how is it?' Nanquan said, 'Stinking bones, eighteen.' Great assembly! From here to the county town is not far; when outsiders hear of it and come to bust the gambling, what then?" He then said, "Baiyun naturally has his principle. I recall Longya saying: 'In studying the Way, one must first have a cause for awakening, / Just like having competed in a swift dragon boat: / Although the old tower and idle fields remain, / Only after winning once does one finally rest.'"
