2.96

上堂云：「目犍連雙足越坑，大迦葉聆箏起舞，畢陵迦訶罵河神，迦留陀夷埋身糞壤，此事教中一一有出處，總道是習氣。秖如祖師門下，達磨九年面壁，祕魔擎扠，禾山打鼓，石鞏彎弓，雪峯輥毬，國師水椀，歸宗拽石，德山入門便棒，臨濟入門便喝，無業纔有人問便道莫妄想。且道，是箇什麼？眾中還有久參先德天下橫行具頂門上眼底衲僧麼？出來為白雲證據，也要暢快平生。有麼有麼？若無，三十年後此話大行。且道，畢竟如何？朱夏火雲歸碧洞，清秋危露滴金盤。」

Ascending the hall, he said, "Maudgalyāyana leapt over the pit with both feet; Mahākāśyapa danced on hearing the zither; Pilindavatsa reviled the river deity; Kālodayin buried his body in excrement. Each of these matters has its source in the teachings, and all are said to be vāsanās. As for under the ancestral masters' gates: Bodhidharma faced the wall for nine years; Momi raised his pitchfork; Heshan beat the drum; Shigong drew his bow; Xuefeng rolled the ball; the National Teacher [pointed to] the bowl of water; Guizong hauled a rock; Deshan struck with his staff upon entering the gate; Linji shouted upon entering the gate; Wuye, as soon as someone asked, would say, 'Do not have false thinking.' Tell me, what is this? Among the assembly, is there still a patch-robed monk who has long practiced with former virtues, roams freely throughout the world, and possesses the eye atop the crown? Come forth and bear witness for Baiyun; let us also gladden our whole life. Is there? Is there? If not, thirty years hence this talk will be widely practiced. Tell me: ultimately, how is it? Vermilion summer's fire-clouds return to the azure cavern; clear autumn's towering dew drips on the golden platter."
