3.36

上堂，舉：「普化道：『明頭來明頭打，暗頭來暗頭打，虛空裏來虛空裏打，四方八面來連枷打。』臨濟聞得，遣僧問云：『總不恁麼來時如何？』化云：『明日大悲院裏有齋。』若是五祖即不然，有人問：『總不恁麼來時如何？』和聲便打。是他須道：『五祖盲枷瞎棒。』我只要儞恁麼道，何故？一任舉似諸方。」

Ascending the hall, the Master cited: “Puhua said: ‘If it comes in the light, I strike in the light; if it comes in the dark, I strike in the dark; if it comes from empty space, I strike from empty space; if it comes from the four quarters and eight directions, I strike with a flail.’ Linji heard of this and sent a monk to ask: ‘What when it does not come in any such way at all?’ Puhua said: ‘Tomorrow there is a vegetarian feast at the Great Compassion Cloister.’ If it were Wuzu, it would not be so. If someone asked, ‘What when it does not come in any such way at all?’ I would strike along with the sound [of his voice]. He would surely say, ‘Wuzu's blind flail and sightless stick.’ I only want you to speak like this. Why? Bring it up before all directions at your will!”
