3.48

上堂，舉：「興化云：『我逢人則不出，出則便為人。』三聖道：『我逢人則出，出則不為人。』」師云：「此二古德，一人文章浩渺，一人武藝全施。若道興化是文亦不得，若道三聖是武亦不得，還於此辨得出麼？若辨得出，許爾通身是命；若辨不出，爾自相度。」

Ascending the hall, he cited: "Xinghua said, 'Whenever I meet someone, I do not emerge; if I emerge, then I act for the person.' Sansheng said, 'Whenever I meet someone, I emerge; if I emerge, then I do not act for the person.'" The Master said, "Between these two ancients of virtue, one possesses literary talent vast and boundless, while the other completely displays martial prowess. If you say Xinghua is literary, that will not do; if you say Sansheng is martial, that will not do either. Can you discern between them here? If you can discern, I grant that your whole body is alive; if you cannot discern, deliberate it yourself."
