上堂：「今朝二月初五，行者先來打鼓，長老肚裏茫然，思量說佛說祖。大地雪深三尺，禽獸喫泥喫土，今年必定豐熟，自然五風十雨。者裏有箇好處，且道有什麼好處？」遂作雷聲云：「是什麼？」復云：「雷乃發聲。」

Ascending the hall, he said: "Today is the fifth day of the second month; the postulant comes first to beat the drum. The elder's mind is completely blank, thinking of speaking of Buddhas and speaking of patriarchs. Over the great earth the snow is three feet deep; birds and beasts eat mud and eat dirt. This year is bound to have an abundant harvest; naturally there will be the five winds and ten rains. Right here there is a good thing; tell me, what good thing is there?" He then made a thunder sound and said: "What is it?" He further said: "Thunder then gives forth its sound."
