問僧：「名什麼？」云：「義懷。」師云：「何不名懷義？」僧云：「當時致得。」師云：「誰與汝安著？」僧云：「某甲受戒來十年也。」師云：「行脚費却多少草鞋？」僧云：「和尚莫瞞人好。」師云：「我也沒量罪過，爾作麼生？」僧無語，師云：「脫空謾語漢。」便打。

He asked a monk, "What is your name?" The monk said, "Yihuai." The Master said, "Why not Huaiyi?" The monk said, "It was obtained at the time." The Master said, "Who gave it to you?" The monk said, "It has been ten years since I received the precepts." The Master said, "How many straw sandals have you worn out in your travels?" The monk said, "The upādhyāya would do better not to deceive people." The Master said, "I too have immeasurable transgressions; what about you?" The monk had no words. The Master said, "A deceitful, lying fellow!" and struck him.
