問新到：「近離甚處？」僧云：「興教。」師云：「達磨一宗掃土而盡。」僧無語，師云：「天上天下。唯我獨尊。」復問僧：「闍黎名什麼？」僧云：「宗雅。」師云：「雅即不問，作麼生是宗？」僧無對。師云：「且限三日。」其僧頻來下語，師皆不諾，僧却問：「某甲見處只恁麼，和尚作麼生？」師云：「爾何不問我？」僧方擬問，被師連打數下。

He asked a newcomer, "Where have you recently come from?" The monk said, "Xingjiao." The Master said, "The single school of Bodhidharma has been swept entirely to dust." The monk had no words. The Master said, "In the heavens above and beneath the heavens, I alone am the honored one." He further asked the monk, "What is your name, ācārya?" The monk said, "Zongya." The Master said, "I do not ask about 'ya' [elegance]; what is 'zong' [the ancestral tradition]?" The monk made no reply. The Master said, "I will give you a three-day limit." The monk frequently came to present phrases, but the Master approved none of them. The monk then asked, "My understanding is only like this; what about the upādhyāya's?" The Master said, "Why didn't you ask me?" Just as the monk was about to ask, the Master struck him several times in succession.
