3.24

舉：「一僧參馬大師，師畫一圓相云：『入也打，不入也打。』僧便入，師便打，僧云：『和尚打某甲不得。』大師靠却拄杖休去。」師云：「二俱不了，和尚打某甲不得，靠却拄杖，擬議不來劈脊便打。」

He brought up: "A monk called upon Great Master Ma. The Master drew a circle and said, 'If you enter, I strike; if you do not enter, I strike.' The monk entered, and the Master struck. The monk said, 'The Upādhyāya cannot strike me.' The Great Master leaned his staff aside and ceased." The Master said, "Neither of them understood thoroughly. 'The Upādhyāya cannot strike me'—leaning his staff aside: before he can hesitate, hit him across the back!"
