3.25

舉：「興化問克賓維那：『不久為唱道之首。』賓云：『不入者保社。』化云：『會來不入？不會不入？』賓云：『沒交涉。』化便打，乃云：『克賓維那法戰不勝，罰錢五貫，充設饡飯。』至來日齋時，興化自白槌云：『克賓維那法戰不勝，不得喫飯。』即便趕出。」師云：「克賓要承嗣興化罰錢出院且致，却須索取者一頓棒始得。且問諸人，棒既喫了，作麼生索？雪竇要斷不平之事，今夜與克賓維那雪屈。」以拄杖一時打散。

He brought up: "Xinghua said to Rector Kebin, 'Before long you will be the leader in expounding the Way.' Bin said, 'I do not join this commune.' Hua said, 'Do you not join having understood, or do you not join not having understood?' Bin said, 'It has no connection.' Hua struck him and said, 'Rector Kebin has lost the Dharma battle; he is fined five strings of cash to provide a meal of boiled rice.' The next day at mealtime, Xinghua himself sounded the mallet and said, 'Rector Kebin has lost the Dharma battle; he is not allowed to eat rice,' and immediately drove him out." The Master said, "Kebin wished to be Xinghua's heir; setting aside the fine and expulsion from the monastery, he ought to have demanded back that thrashing of the stick. And I ask you all: having taken the stick, how would he demand it back? Xuedou wishes to settle an unfair affair, and tonight will clear Rector Kebin's grievance." He dispersed them all at once with his staff.
