3.52

舉：「太原孚上座參雪峯，至法堂上顧視，雪峯便下看知事，師云：『一千五百人作家宗師，被孚老一覷，便高竪降旗。』孚至來日入方丈云：『昨日觸忤和尚。』峯云：『知是般事便休。』師云：『果然。』僧問雲門：『作麼生是觸忤處？』門便打。」師云：「打得百千萬箇，有什麼用處？直須盡大地人喫棒，方可扶竪雪峯。且道，太原孚具什麼眼？」

He cited: "Senior Monk Fu of Taiyuan called upon Xuefeng. Arriving at the Dharma Hall, he looked around; Xuefeng then looked down toward the administrative monks. The Master [Mingjue] said, 'An adept ancestral teacher of fifteen hundred people, with just one glance from Old Fu, immediately raised high the flag of surrender.' Fu entered the Abbot's quarters the next day and said, 'Yesterday I offended the Upādhyāya.' Xuefeng said, 'Knowing it is such an affair, then let it rest.' The Master said, 'Indeed.' A monk asked Yunmen, 'What was the place of offense?' Yunmen immediately struck him." The Master said, "Even if one struck hundreds of thousands, what use would it be? Only when everyone in the whole earth takes the stick can Xuefeng be truly sustained. Tell me, what kind of eye did Fu of Taiyuan possess?"
