3.71

舉：「玄沙見鼓山來，作一圓相，山云：『人人出者箇不得。』沙云：『情知爾向驢胎馬腹裏作活計。』山云：『和尚又作麼生？』玄沙云：『人人出者箇不得。』山云：『和尚漝麼道得，某甲為什麼不得？』沙云：『我得爾不得。』」師云：「只解貪觀白浪，不知失却手橈。」

[The Master] cited: "Xuansha saw Gushan coming and drew a circle. Gushan said, 'No one can get out of this.' Xuansha said, 'I knew well you were making a livelihood inside a donkey's womb and a horse's belly.' Gushan said, 'What about the Upādhyāya?' Xuansha said, 'No one can get out of this.' Gushan said, 'The Upādhyāya can say so—why can I not?' Xuansha said, 'I can, you cannot.'" The Master said, "He only knew to covet the sight of the white waves, not realizing he had lost the oar from his hands."
