3.91

與玄沙見鼓山來。畫一圓相。山云。人人出這箇不得。沙云。情知爾驢胎馬腹裏作活計。山云。和尚又作麼生。沙云。人人出這箇不得。山云。和尚恁麼却得。某甲為什麼不得。沙云。我得爾不得。師云。玄沙大似倚勢欺人。以強陵弱。蓋他撥得轉弄得出。兩箇一般。為什麼道。我得爾不得。是真難掩。是偽不冐。

[The Master cited:] Xuansha, seeing Gushan coming, drew a circle. Gushan said, "No one can step outside of this." Xuansha said, "I knew very well you were making a livelihood inside a donkey's womb and a horse's belly." Gushan said, "What about the Venerable?" Xuansha said, "No one can step outside of this." Gushan said, "When the Venerable does so, it is acceptable; why is it not acceptable for me?" Xuansha said, "It is acceptable for me, but not for you." The Master said, "Xuansha was very much like relying on power to bully others and using strength to oppress the weak. Because he could turn it around and bring it out, the two were identical. Why did he say, 'It is acceptable for me, but not for you'? What is genuine is hard to conceal; what is counterfeit cannot be passed off."
