3.84

舉：「僧問南院：『從上諸聖什麼處去？』院云：『不上天堂，即入地獄。』云：『和尚作麼生？』院云：『還知寶應老落處麼？』僧擬議，院以拂子驀口打，復喚僧近前云：『令合是爾行。』又打一拂子。」師云：「令既自行，且拂子不知來處。雪竇道箇瞎，且要雪上加霜。」

[The Master] cited: "A monk asked Nanyuan, 'Where do the sages from of old go?' Nanyuan said, 'If not ascending to heaven, then entering hell.' The monk said, 'What about the Upādhyāya?' Nanyuan said, 'Do you know where Old Baoying lands?' The monk hesitated; Nanyuan struck him across the mouth with his whisk, then called the monk forward and said, 'The order should rightfully be executed by you.' He struck him again with the whisk." The Master said, "Since the order was executed by himself, and moreover the whisk knew not where it came from, Xuedou says 'Blind!'—just adding frost to snow."
