3.85

舉：「保福問長慶：『盤山道：光境俱忘，復是何物？洞山道：光境未忘，復是何物？據二老宿，總未得勦絕，作麼生道得勦絕去？』慶良久，福云：『情知向鬼窟裏作活計。』慶云：『爾作麼生？』福云：『兩手扶犁水過膝。』」師云：「俱忘未忘總由我，保福因什麼道未得勦絕？酌然能有幾箇。諸人又作麼生道，免得長慶在鬼窟裏。」師云：「柳絮隨風，自西自東。」

He cited: "Baofu asked Changqing, 'Panshan said: "When radiance and objects are both forgotten, what is it again?" Dongshan said: "When radiance and objects are not yet forgotten, what is it again?" According to these two old masters, neither has yet managed to cut it off completely. How can one speak so as to cut it off completely?' Changqing remained silent for a long time. Baofu said, 'I knew all along that you were making a living inside a demon's cave.' Changqing said, 'What about you?' Baofu said, 'With both hands holding the plow, the water is over my knees.'" The Master said, "Both forgotten or not yet forgotten—it is entirely up to me. Why did Baofu say they had not yet cut it off completely? Truly, how many could there be [who understand]? And how would you all speak to keep Changqing out of the demon's cave?" The Master said, "Willow catkins drift with the wind, now from the west, now from the east."
