4.76

師一日見僧來，拈起拄杖云：「我兩手分付，儞作麼生？」僧退身云：「不敢。」師云：「為什麼棒上不成龍？」僧云：「三十年後恐辜負和尚。」師放下拄杖云：「吽吽。」

One day the master saw a monk coming, picked up his staff, and said: "I entrust it with both hands; what will you do?" The monk stepped back and said: "I would not dare." The master said: "Why did you not become a dragon upon the stick?" The monk said: "After thirty years, I fear I would let down the upādhyāya." The master set down the staff and said: "Hūm! Hūm!"
