4.83

師一日同僧遊山次，到開山和尚塔頭，僧云：「見說開山便是黃巢。」師云：「黃巢是草頭天子，為什麼却作住山人？」僧云：「忌辰也好與他設粥。」師不肯，自代云：「賞不避仇讎。」

One day the master was wandering in the mountains with a monk and reached the stūpa of the founding upādhyāya. The monk said: "I have heard it said that the founder was Huang Chao." The master said: "Huang Chao was a grassroots Son of Heaven; why did he instead become a dweller in the mountains?" The monk said: "On the anniversary of his death, it would also be good to offer porridge for him." The master did not approve, and on his own behalf said: "Rewards do not avoid enemies."
