4.97

唐憲宗迎舍利，現五色光，百辟俱賀，惟韓愈端立，帝問：「百僚皆賀，卿為甚不賀？」愈曰：「臣曾看經來，佛光非青黃赤白等相，此是神龍荷助之光。」帝云：「作麼生是佛光？」代云：「陛下高垂天鑑。」

When Emperor Xianzong of the Tang welcomed the relics, five-colored light manifested; all the hundred ministers offered congratulations, but Han Yu alone stood upright. The emperor asked, "All the officials offer congratulations; why do you not congratulate Us, Minister?" Yu said, "Your servant has previously read the scriptures: the light of a Buddha does not have the marks of blue, yellow, red, white, and so on; this is the light of a divine dragon carrying and aiding [the relics]." The emperor said, "What is the Buddha's light?" On his behalf [the Master] said, "Your Majesty hangs high the heavenly mirror."
