He raised: "Xuefeng knocked on the door of the Upādhyāya Guan. Guan said, 'Who?' Feng said, 'The phoenix chick.' Guan said, 'What for?' Feng said, 'To peck old Guan.' Guan then opened the door. Xuefeng had just entered when Guan seized him, saying, 'Speak, speak!' Feng hesitated in thought, and Guan shoved him out. After Xuefeng took up residence, he instructed the assembly, saying, 'If at that time I had entered old Guan's door, where would you crowd of wine-dreg-swilling fellows go to grope about?' An elder said, 'Xuefeng spoke these words in vain: at that time he could not enter, and even now he cannot enter.'" The Master said, "This fellow who betrays kindness and turns his back on virtue—what connection does he have? At that time he could not enter; was that instructing you to enter? Now, since you cannot grope it out, you drag Xuefeng along so that both are at old Guan's gate."
