[The Master] cited: "A non-Buddhist asked the Buddha, 'I do not ask about words, nor do I ask about wordlessness.' The World-Honoured One remained silent for a good while. The non-Buddhist bowed in reverence and praised him, saying, 'The World-Honoured One with great loving-kindness and great compassion has cleared away my clouds of delusion and enabled me to enter.' After the non-Buddhist left, Ānanda asked the Buddha, 'What did the non-Buddhist realize that he spoke of having gained entrance?' The World-Honoured One said, 'Like a fine horse in the world, which runs upon seeing the shadow of the whip.'"
The Master critiqued it, saying, "The non-Buddhist struck true through what was crooked; the World-Honoured One saw the tower and struck the tower. Ānanda was not skilled at looking on from the side, drawing the World-Honoured One into dragging through mud and dripping with water. According to this mountain monk's view, waiting until he said, 'I do not ask about words, nor do I ask about wordlessness,' along with his voice I would strike him. And when Ānanda asked, 'What did the non-Buddhist realize that he spoke of having gained entrance?' along with his voice I would also strike him. Why? To kill a person requires the sword that kills persons; to give life to a person requires the sword that gives life to persons."
