17.51

舉：「僧問長慶：『如何是合聖之言？』長慶云：『山僧被闍梨一問，直得口似匾檐。』」師拈云：「是則是，應機無差，爭奈大驚小怪。或有問道林：『如何是合聖之言？』只對他道：『誌公不是閑和尚，剪刀只在臥床頭。』」

He cited: "A monk asked Changqing, 'What are words that accord with the holy?' Changqing said, 'Being asked this question by the ācārya, this mountain monk's mouth has become just like a shoulder pole.'"
The Master critiqued this, saying, "It is true indeed, responding to the dynamic without error, yet what can be done about making much ado about nothing? If someone asks Daolin, 'What are words that accord with the holy?', I would only tell him, 'Master Zhi was not an idle monk; / The scissors are right at the head of the bed.'"
