18.35

舉：「道吾至一家弔慰。漸源撫棺問：『生耶死耶？』吾云：『生也不道，死也不道。』源云：『為什麼不道？』吾云：『不道不道。』後於石霜再舉，始知落處。一日將鍬子於法堂上，從東過西從西過東，霜云：『作什麼？』源云：『覓先師靈骨。』霜云：『洪波浩渺，白浪滔天，覓什麼靈骨？』源云：『正好著力。』太原孚云：『先師靈骨猶在。』」

He cited: "Daowu went to a family to offer condolences. Jianyuan patted the coffin and asked, 'Alive or dead?' Daowu said, 'I will not say alive, and I will not say dead.' Jianyuan said, 'Why will you not say?' Daowu said, 'I will not say! I will not say!' Later, when he brought this up again with Shishuang, he first understood where it landed. One day, carrying a spade in the Dharma hall, he crossed from east to west and from west to east. Shishuang said, 'What are you doing?' Jianyuan said, 'Searching for the late master's sacred bones.' Shishuang said, 'Vast billows spreading wide, white waves surging to the heavens—what sacred bones are you searching for?' Jianyuan said, 'Just the right time to exert effort.' Taiyuan Fu said, 'The late master's sacred bones are still here.'"
