18.53

舉：「太原孚上座問鼓山：『父母未生時，鼻孔在什麼處？』山云：『即今生也，鼻孔在什麼處？』孚不肯，乃云：『爾問我，與爾答。』山云：『父母未生前，鼻孔在什麼處？』孚乃搖扇而已。」

Case: Senior Monk Fu of Taiyuan asked Gushan, "Before parents gave birth to you, where were your nostrils?" Gushan said, "Right now, being born, where are your nostrils?" Fu did not approve and said, "You ask me, and I will answer you." Gushan said, "Before parents gave birth to you, where were your nostrils?" Fu merely shook his fan.
