18.63

舉：「趙州云：『老僧答話去也，有解問底致將一問來。』時有僧出禮拜，州云：『比來拋塼引玉，却引得箇墼子。』下座。後法眼舉問覺鐵觜：『此意如何？』覺云：『與和尚舉箇喻，如國家拜將相似。』問：『誰人去得？』有一人云：『某去得。』答云：『汝去不得。』法眼云：『我會也。』」

Case: Zhaozhou said, "This old monk is going to answer questions; let anyone who knows how to ask bring forward a question." At that time a monk came forward and bowed. Zhaozhou said, "Just now I cast a brick to draw jade, but I only managed to draw an unbaked tile." He then stepped down from the seat. Later, Fayan cited this and asked Jue Tiezi, "What was the meaning of this?" Jue said, "Let me give the Venerable an analogy: it is like when the state appoints a commander." When asked, 'Who is able to go?' someone says, 'I am able to go.' The answer comes, 'You are not able to go.'" Fayan said, "I understand."
