19.61

舉：「代宗皇帝問忠國師：『和尚百年後所須何物？』國師云：『要箇無縫塔子。』帝云：『請師塔樣。』國師云：『會麼？』帝云：『不會。』國師云：『吾有付法弟子耽源，却諳此事，請詔問之。』國師遷化後，帝召耽源，問此意如何，耽源呈頌云：『湘之南，潭之北，中有黃金充一國，無影樹下合同船，瑠璃殿上無知識。』」

[Yuanwu] brought up [the case]: "Emperor Daizong asked National Teacher Zhong, 'What will you need a hundred years from now?' The National Teacher said, 'I need a seamless stūpa.' The Emperor said, 'Please, Master, provide the stūpa design.' The National Teacher said, 'Do you understand?' The Emperor said, 'I do not understand.' The National Teacher said, 'I have a Dharma-transmission disciple, Danyuan, who is well versed in this matter; please summon and ask him.' After the National Teacher passed away, the Emperor summoned Danyuan and asked what this meant. Danyuan presented a verse: 'South of Xiang, north of Tan, / therein gold fills an entire realm. / Beneath the shadowless tree, the unified boat; / upon the lapis lazuli palace, no spiritual teacher.'"
