19.63

舉：「石頭見藥山坐次問：『爾在此作什麼？』山云：『一物不為。』頭云：『恁麼則閑坐也。』山云：『閑坐則為也。』頭云：『汝道不為，不為箇什麼？』山云：『千聖亦不識。』石頭以頌讚之：『從來共住不知名，任運相將只麼行，自古上賢猶不識，造次凡流豈可明。』」

[Yuanwu] brought up [the case]: "Shitou saw Yaoshan sitting and asked, 'What are you doing here?' Yaoshan said, 'I am not doing a single thing.' Shitou said, 'Then you are sitting idly.' Yaoshan said, 'Sitting idly is doing something.' Shitou said, 'You say you are not doing; not doing what?' Yaoshan said, 'Even the thousand sages do not know.' Shitou praised him with a verse: 'Living together from the first, without knowing the name, / following along with conditions, just walking like this. / Since ancient times, even supreme sages did not know; / how could hasty commoners ever understand?'"
