2.42

上堂云：「一向不恁麼，目視雲漢不狥人情；一向恁麼，灰頭土面帶水拕泥；恁麼中不恁麼，就下平高；不恁麼中却恁麼，從空放下。或有箇恁麼不恁麼總不管，亦無明亦無暗，亦不放亦不收。且道如何？到頭霜夜月，任運落前溪。」

Ascending the hall, he said, "Consistently not so: eyes gazing at the clouds and Milky Way, not following human sentiment. Consistently so: dirt on the head and mud on the face, carrying water and dragging through mud. Not so within being so: accommodating the low to level the high. Being so within not so: letting go from the void. Or there is someone who pays no attention to either being so or not so: neither bright nor dark, neither releasing nor gathering. Tell me, how is it? Ultimately, under the frosty night moon, / It falls into the front ravine at its own accord."
