2.43

上堂云：「天寒人寒，大家在箇裏，滴水滴凍，無這閑工夫。庭際之人，驀地覓心不得，衲衣下事，誰諳野火燒山。千重百匝沒遮欄，漢去胡來絕回換。且作麼生是不離當處底一句？鶴飛千尺雪，龍起一潭氷。」

Ascending the hall, he said: “The sky is cold and people are cold; everyone is in this. Water drops, ice freezes; there is no leisure for this. A person in the courtyard suddenly cannot find mind; who understands the matter beneath the patch-robed monk's gown when wild fire burns the mountain? A thousand layers, a hundred coils, without obstruction; Han departs, Hu comes, cutting off all trade. But how do you speak a phrase that does not leave the immediate spot? The crane flies through a thousand feet of snow; the dragon rises from a pool of ice.”
