李典御作年齋，上堂云：「大眾！如來涅槃心，菩薩大解脫，祖師正法眼，衲子金剛鎚，有照有用、有權有實，有縱有擒、有殺有活，尚在向上關捩子上，是箇人向箇裏出沒，向箇裏拈提，終未能全機剔脫。若也全機剔脫去，變大地作黃金，攪長河為酥酪，改禾莖為粟柄，易短壽作長年，不為分外。何故？提向上綱宗，用作家鼻孔，回歲旦於今朝，用慶年於此日。正當恁麼時如何？萬人叢裏插高標，錦上鋪華轉光彩。」

On the occasion of Director Li holding an annual memorial vegetarian feast, the Master ascended the hall and said: "Great assembly! The Tathāgata's nirvāṇa-mind, the bodhisattvas' great liberation, the Patriarchs' Treasury of the True Dharma Eye, and the patch-robed monk's diamond hammer—having illumination and having function, having the provisional and having the real, having release and having capture, having killing and having giving life: these are still on the transcendent pivotal axis. If someone appears and disappears in this place, or raises and holds aloft in this place, he still cannot be completely and dynamically stripped free. If one is completely and dynamically stripped free, then transforming the great earth into gold, churning the long river into ghee, changing stalks of grain into millet stems, and converting a short life into long years—none of this is beyond one's lot. Why? Holding aloft the transcendent lineage guideline and employing the adepts' nostrils, we turn the year's beginning to this morning and celebrate the year on this day. Right at such a time, how is it? Raising a high banner amid a crowd of ten thousand, laying flowers upon brocade, adding ever more radiance."
