[The Master] cited: "Seeing a monk approach, Shishi raised his staff and said, 'The buddhas of the past are also thus; the buddhas of the present are also thus; the buddhas of the future are also thus.' Changsha said, 'Put down the staff, and come convey another message.'"
The Master said, "Shishi set forth an opening question, which was quite solitary and precipitous; were it not for Changsha, how could he have tallied with the dynamic? Even so, he only knew 'thus', and did not know 'not thus.'" He then raised his staff and said, "The buddhas of the past are not thus; the buddhas of the present are not thus; the buddhas of the future are not thus. If you all simply say 'Put down the staff,' I also know you are merely of the sort who imitate words. Speak a phrase at the place of living dynamic!"
