[The Master] cited: "A monk asked Xianglin: 'What is the matter beneath the patch-robe?' Xianglin said: 'In the twelfth lunar month, fire burns the mountain.' Xuedou said: 'In the twelfth lunar month, fire burns the mountain— / Ten thousand varieties, a thousand sorts. / Perched on a pine, the crane is chilled; / Treading snow, the person is cold. / Bodhidharma does not understand; / Great difficulty, great difficulty!'"
The Master critiqued: "Big and small Xuedou follow along rinsing their mouths, unable to cut off perplexity. If it were Daolin, it would not be so: In the twelfth lunar month, fire burns the mountain— / Out of the ordinary, without cause. / Cotton wrapping an unusual stone, / A lump of mud inside iron."
