Upon opening the hearth, he ascended the hall. A monk asked, "An ancient said: 'Striking the void makes a sound; hitting wood is soundless.' What is striking the void making a sound?" The Master said, "Old man Śākya has arrived." The Master then said, "The Buddhas of the three periods turn the great dharmacakra within the flames. Why get feverish? The flames expound the Dharma for the Buddhas of the three periods, and the Buddhas of the three periods stand listening; yet one must still take care of one's eyebrows. If you just barely hear it penetrating bone and marrow, believe it completely, and see it thoroughly, then right here you will live and die together with the Buddhas of the three periods, arise and perish together with the flames, attaining liberation on the spot and gaining great peace. A patched robe covering the head is just a world of pure cool. If this is not yet so, you only know that affairs pass before your eyes, unaware that old age is arriving over your head."
