Transport Commissioner Jiang sent the three large characters 'Yunju Shan' (Mount Yunju) and requested [the master] to ascend the seat. [The master] said, "Phenomenon upon phenomenon is perfectly interfused; mind upon mind is empty and tranquil. Broadly embracing without an exterior, the patterns and designs are already manifested; finely entering without an interval, eyes cannot observe it. Therefore it is said, 'The myriad phenomena are the light of mind; all conditions are illuminated solely by the nature. Originally there is no deluded or awakened person; one only needs to understand today.' Today, being just like this, sitting and cutting off the heads of the reward and transformation Buddhas, what do you call mind? What do you call nature? To speak like this has already cut off all sense roots. And what is the place where all sense roots are cut off? I open a slight crack of a path to communicate the news. Do you understand thoroughly? In a great drought, receiving sweet rain; in great heat, obtaining cool refreshment." He further had a verse that said:
"The manifold peaks wind and coil, the halls stand deep and lofty; / In the heavens, clarity and stillness rain upon the emerald pool. / Three large characters like a thirsty thoroughbred and an enraged lion; / The lofty traces throughout a thousand ages stir the famed monastery."
