1.37

上堂，拈拄杖卓一下召大眾云：「還聞麼？」復舉起云：「觀世音菩薩來也，在徑山拄杖頭上，口喃喃地道：『諸行無常是生滅法，生滅既滅，寂滅現前。』拈須彌盧於掌上，向針眼裏打鞦韆，直饒便恁麼見得徹去，猶較拄杖子十萬八千，且道：徑山拄杖子有甚麼奇特？」擲下云：「不直半分錢。」

Ascending the hall, he took up his staff, struck it once, and addressed the great assembly, saying, "Do you still hear?" Holding it up again, he said, "Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva has arrived! On the tip of Jingshan's staff, his mouth mutters, saying: 'All conditioned things are impermanent; this is the dharma of arising and ceasing. Arising and ceasing having ceased, quiescent extinction manifests.' Picking up Sumeru on the palm, swinging on a swing inside the eye of a needle—even if you were to see through it thoroughly like this, it is still off from the staff by one hundred and eight thousand [li]. Tell me: what is extraordinary about Jingshan's staff?" Throwing it down, he said, "It is not worth half a coin."
