臨濟問寺主：「甚麼處去來？」云：「州中糶黃米去來。」濟以拄杖畫一畫云：「還糶得這箇麼？」生便喝，濟便打。次典座至，濟乃舉似典座，座云：「寺主不會和尚意。」濟云：「爾又作麼生？」座禮拜，濟亦打。頌云：

Linji asked the abbot, "Where have you come from?" He replied, "I have come from selling yellow rice in the prefecture." Linji drew a line with his staff and said, "Did you manage to sell this?" The monk gave a shout, and Linji struck him. Next the tenzo arrived, and Linji cited this to the tenzo. The tenzo said, "The abbot did not understand the Venerable's meaning." Linji said, "What about you?" The tenzo bowed, and Linji struck him as well. A verse says:
