2.16

上堂舉：「睦州問僧正云：『講得唯識論麼？』正云：『不敢，小年曾讀文字來。』州拈起糖餅，擘作兩片云：『爾作麼生？』正無語，州云：『喚作糖餅是？不喚作糖餅是？』正云：『不可不喚作糖餅。』州却喚沙彌：『來來，爾喚作甚麼？』彌云：『糖餅。』州云：『爾也講得唯識論。』」師云：「僧正與沙彌，真實講得唯識論，只是不知糖餅來處。睦州老人雖是一方善知識，若是三界唯心萬法唯識，畢竟理會不得。」

Ascending the hall, he cited: "Muzhou asked the Monastic Rector, 'Can you lecture on the Treatise on Consciousness-Only?' The Rector said, 'I would not dare claim so, but in my youth I did study the texts.' Muzhou picked up a sugar cake, broke it into two pieces, and said, 'What do you say?' The Rector was speechless. Muzhou said, 'Is calling it a sugar cake right, or is not calling it a sugar cake right?' The Rector said, 'It cannot not be called a sugar cake.' Muzhou then called to a novice, 'Come, come! What do you call it?' The novice said, 'A sugar cake.' Muzhou said, 'You too can lecture on the Treatise on Consciousness-Only.'" The Master said, "The Rector and the novice truly could lecture on the Treatise on Consciousness-Only; they merely did not know where the sugar cake came from. Although Old Man Muzhou was a good friend of one quarter, when it comes to 'the three realms are mind-only, the ten thousand phenomena are consciousness-only,' he ultimately failed to understand it."
