2.32

上堂：「千說萬說，讚說、毀說，安立說、隨俗說，顯了說、蓋覆說，盡是盌躂丘。」拈起拄杖云：「爭如直下識取這箇，不被生死之所轉，不被寒暑之所遷。或有箇衲僧出來道：『也只是箇拄杖子，用識作甚麼？』今時有一種杜撰禪和，多作這般見解。」擲拄杖下座。

Ascending the high seat: "A thousand explanations, ten thousand explanations; explanations of praise, explanations of slander; conventional explanations, colloquial explanations; explicit explanations, concealed explanations—all are mounds of broken tiles." Raising the staff, he said, "How does that compare to directly recognising this, not turned by birth and death, not shifted by cold and heat? If a patch-robed monk were to step forward and say, 'It is just a staff; what is the use of recognising it?' nowadays there is a sort of bogus Chan monk who mostly holds this kind of view." Throwing down the staff, he stepped down from the seat.
