2.51

上堂，舉：「高亭初參德山，隔江問訊，德山以手招之，高亭忽然開悟，乃橫趨而去，更不回顧，後開法嗣德山。」師云：「高亭橫趨而去，許伊是箇靈利衲僧，若要法嗣德山，即未可，何故？猶與德山隔江在。」

Ascending the hall, [the Master] cited: "When Gaoting first went to study under Deshan, he inquired after him from across the river. Deshan beckoned to him with his hand. Gaoting suddenly had an awakening, whereupon he turned aside and walked away without looking back. Later he opened his dharma seat as an heir to Deshan." The Master said, "Gaoting's turning aside and walking away shows he was an agile patch-robed monk, but if he wanted to be an heir to Deshan's dharma, it was not yet permissible. Why? He was still separated from Deshan by a river."
