3.13

上堂，舉：「僧問投子：『月未圓時如何？』子云：『吞却三箇四箇。』僧云：『圓後如何？』子云：『吐却七箇八箇。』」師云：「三箇與四箇，七箇與八箇，數目甚分明，無人數得過。既是數目分明，為甚麼無人數得過？」良久云：「道士著白襴，且非真措大。」

Ascending the high seat, he cited: "A monk asked Touzi: 'How is it before the moon is full?' Touzi said: 'Swallow down three or four.' The monk said: 'How is it after it is full?' Touzi said: 'Spit out seven or eight.'" The Master said: "Three and four, seven and eight—the numbers are very distinct, yet no one can count them through. Since the numbers are distinct, why can no one count them through?" After a long pause, he said: "A Daoist wearing a white robe is still not a true scholar."
