舉本顏二首座立僧上堂：「驅耕夫之牛，奪饑人之食，趯翻大海水，拳倒須彌盧，生擒虎兕，活捉獰龍，猶未是衲僧本分事。作麼生是衲僧本分事？問取堂中二首座。」

Addressing the assembly on appointing the two head monks Ben and Yan: "Driving away the plowman's ox, snatching the starving man's food, kicking over the great ocean's waters, punching down Mount Sumeru, seizing tigers and rhinoceroses alive, capturing ferocious dragons bare-handed—these are still not the patch-robed monk's proper affair. What is the patch-robed monk's proper affair? Inquire of the two head monks in the hall."
