Ascending the hall, [the Master] cited: "Xuansha instructed the assembly, saying, 'The venerable elders of all quarters all speak of receiving people and benefiting living beings. If three kinds of sick persons come, how do you receive them? For the blind person, when you take up the mallet or raise the fly-whisk, he does not see it. For the deaf person, when there is the samādhi of speech, he does not hear it. For the mute person, when you tell him to speak, he cannot speak. So how do you receive them? If you cannot receive these people, the Buddha Dharma has no efficacy.' A monk asked Yunmen for further instruction. Yunmen said, 'Make your bows.' When the monk finished bowing and stood up, Yunmen poked him with his staff. The monk stepped back. Yunmen said, 'You are not blind.' He then called him forward. The monk came forward. Yunmen said, 'You are not deaf.' He then held up his staff and said, 'Do you understand?' The monk said, 'I do not understand.' Yunmen said, 'You are not mute.' Thereupon that monk was awakened." The Master said, "Although this monk was awakened, he only awakened to Yunmen's Chan; as for Xuansha's Chan, he still needs to buy straw sandals to get it right."
