上堂，僧問：「翠微供養羅漢，丹霞燒却木佛，未審這二尊宿，阿那箇是？」師云：「阿那箇不是？」進云：「中間底分付阿誰？」師云：「且儘摸索。」進云：「為甚麼都在拄杖頭上橫來竪去？」師云：「眼華作甚麼？」進云：「只這便是和尚為人處也無？」師云：「是。」乃云：「丹霞燒木佛，不順人情；翠微供羅漢，隨方毘尼。若到徑山門下，總用不著。旦道徑山門下用箇甚麼？秋江清淺時，白露和煙島，良哉觀世音，全身入荒草。」

Ascending the high seat, a monk asked: "Cuiwei made offerings to arhats, while Danxia burned the wooden buddha. I wonder, between these two venerable masters, which one is right?" The Master said: "Which one is not?" [The monk] advanced: "To whom is the middle assigned?" The Master said: "Just grope around as much as you like." [The monk] advanced: "Why do they both come horizontally and go vertically on the tip of the staff?" The Master said: "Why are your eyes dazzled with flowers?" [The monk] advanced: "Is this precisely where the Venerable serves people?" The Master said: "Yes." Then he said: "Danxia burning the wooden buddha did not accord with human sentiments; Cuiwei making offerings to the arhats was a Vinaya suited to the locality. If brought under the gate of Jingshan, neither is of any use. Tell me, what is used under the gate of Jingshan? / When the autumn river is clear and shallow, / White dew mingles with the misty isles; / How marvelous, Avalokiteśvara, / Completely entering the overgrown weeds!"
