5.23

上堂，舉：「睦州纔見僧云：『現成公案放汝三十棒。』僧云：『某甲如是。』州云：『三門頭金剛為甚麼竪起拳頭？』僧云：『金剛尚乃如是。』州便打。」師云：「雖然無孔笛，撞著氈拍板，直是五音調暢、六律諧和，子細檢點將來，未免傍觀者哂。且道：誰是傍觀者？」良久云：「不得動著，動著打折爾驢腰。」

Ascending the hall, he cited: "As soon as Muzhou saw a monk, he said: 'The ready-made gong'an relieves you of thirty blows.' The monk said: 'I am as such.' Muzhou said: 'Why does the Vajra at the main gate raise his fist?' The monk said: 'Even the Vajra is as such.' Muzhou then struck him." The Master said: "Although the fluteless pipe met the felt clapper, producing five fully flowing tones and six harmonious pitches, when carefully examined, it inevitably draws the sneer of the bystander. Now tell me: who is the bystander?" After a long pause, he said: "You must not stir; stir, and I will break your donkey's back!"
