6.25

上堂，舉：「乾峯示眾云：『舉一不得舉二，放過一著，落在第二。』雲門出眾云：『昨日有人從天台來，却往徑山去。』乾峯遂喚維那云：『來日不得普請。』」師云：「乾峯洗面摸著鼻，雲門喫飯咬著沙，二人驀地相逢著，元來却是舊讐家。雖然如是，只許老胡知，不許老胡會。」

Ascending the hall, [the Master] cited: "Qianfeng instructed the assembly, saying: 'When one thing is brought up, a second must not be brought up; let one move slip by, and one falls into the secondary.' Yunmen came out from the assembly and said: 'Yesterday someone came from Tiantai and went instead to Jingshan.' Qianfeng thereupon called to the karmadāna, saying: 'Tomorrow there must be no general labor.'"
The Master said: "Qianfeng washed his face and touched his nose; Yunmen ate his rice and bit on sand. The two suddenly met—turns out they were old enemies after all! Even though it is like this, only the Old Barbarian is permitted to know; the Old Barbarian is not permitted to understand."
