7.28

示眾，舉：「洞山云：『須知有佛向上事。』僧問：『如何是佛向上事？』山云：『非佛。』雲門云：『名不得，狀不得，所以言非。』」師云：「二尊宿恁麼提持，佛向上事且緩緩。這裏即不然，如何是佛向上事？拽拄杖劈脊便打，免教伊在佛向上桗根。」

Instructing the assembly, he brought up the following: "Dongshan said, 'You must know there is an affair beyond the buddhas.' A monk asked, 'What is the affair beyond the buddhas?' Dongshan said, 'Not buddha.' Yunmen said, 'It cannot be named, it cannot be described, therefore it is called "not."'"
The Master said, "The two venerable elders maintained it in this way, but the affair beyond the buddhas is still put off. Here it is not so. What is the affair beyond the buddhas? Pulling out the staff and striking right across the back, preventing him from taking root beyond the buddhas."
