7.38

示眾，舉：「麻谷持錫到章敬，遶禪床三匝振錫一下，卓然而立。」師云：「純鋼打就，生鐵鑄成。」敬云：「是是。」師云：「錦上鋪華三五重。」谷又持錫到南泉，遶禪床三匝振錫一下，卓然而立。師云：「已納敗闕了也。」泉云：「不是不是。」師云：「枷上更著杻。」谷云：「章敬道是，和尚為甚麼道不是？」師云：「愁人莫向愁人說。」泉云：「章敬則是，是汝不是，此是風力所轉，終成敗壞。」師云：「試把火照看，南泉面皮厚多少。」復召大眾云：「雲門恁麼批判，且道：肯他不肯他？」

Instructing the assembly, he cited: "Magu, carrying his staff, came to Zhangjing. He circled the meditation seat three times, struck the staff once, and stood tall and erect."
The Master said, "Forged from pure steel, cast from pig iron."
"Zhangjing said, 'Right, right.'"
The Master said, "Spreading three or five layers of brocade over flowers."
"Magu also carried his staff to Nanquan, circled the meditation seat three times, struck the staff once, and stood tall and erect."
The Master said, "He has already suffered defeat."
"Nanquan said, 'Not right, not right.'"
The Master said, "Adding handcuffs on top of the cangue."
"Magu said, 'Zhangjing said "right"; why does the Venerable say "not right"?'"
The Master said, "A sorrowful person should not speak to a sorrowful person."
"Nanquan said, 'Zhangjing was right; it is you who are not right. This is turned by the power of the wind; in the end it falls into ruin.'"
The Master said, "Try taking a torch and looking: how thick is Nanquan's face?"
He then addressed the assembly: "Yunmen has judged it like this; tell me: does he approve of him or not?"
