8.22

示眾，舉：「龐居士問靈照女：『明明百草頭，明明祖師意，作麼生會？』照云：『這老漢，頭白齒黃，作這箇見解。』居士云：『爾作麼生？』照云：『明明百草頭，明明祖師意。』」師云：「龐居士先行不到，靈照女末後太過；直饒齊行齊到，若到雲門，一坑埋却。且道：過在甚麼處？明明百草頭，明明祖師意。」

Instructing the assembly, he cited: "Layman Pang asked his daughter Lingzhao, 'Clearly on the tips of the hundred grasses; clearly the Patriarch's meaning. How do you understand this?' Lingzhao said, 'This old fellow, with white hair and yellow teeth, holds such a view!' The layman said, 'How about you?' Lingzhao said, 'Clearly on the tips of the hundred grasses; clearly the Patriarch's meaning.'" The Master said, "Layman Pang walked ahead but did not arrive; his daughter Lingzhao came behind and went too far. Even if they had walked together and arrived together, had they come to Yunmen, they would have been buried in the same pit. Tell me: where is the fault? Clearly on the tips of the hundred grasses; clearly the Patriarch's meaning."
