9.16

問僧：「路逢達道人，不將語默對時如何？」僧珍重便行，師呵呵大笑。次一僧入，師云：「我適來問這僧：『路逢達道人，不將語默對時如何？』他珍重便行。爾道他會不會？」僧擬問訊，師便打出。

He asked a monk, "'When meeting a person who has attained the Way on the road, what will you do if you do not face them with speech or silence?'" The monk said, "Take care," and walked away. The Master laughed heartily. Next, another monk entered. The Master said, "Just now I asked this monk: 'When meeting a person who has attained the Way on the road, what will you do if you do not face them with speech or silence?' He said, 'Take care,' and walked away. Do you say he understood or did not understand?" The monk was about to make inquiries, and the Master struck him and drove him out.
