9.20

僧請益云：「不知某甲死後向甚麼處去？」師云：「爾只今是生是死？」僧云：「生也不道，死也不道。」師云：「這漸源奴。」僧擬議，師便打出。復問一僧：「適來這僧納一場敗闕，爾還知麼？」僧云：「知。」師亦打出。

A monk asked for further instruction, saying, "I do not know where I will go after death." The Master said, "Right now, are you alive or dead?" The monk said, "I say neither living nor dead." The Master said, "You Jianyuan slave!" The monk hesitated, and the Master struck him and drove him out. He then asked another monk, "Just now this monk incurred a total defeat; do you know it?" The monk said, "I know it." The Master struck him and drove him out as well.
