9.21

問僧：「香嚴上樹話，爾作麼生會？」僧云：「好對春風唱鷓鴣。」師云：「虎頭。」上座出眾云：「樹上即不問，未上樹請和尚道，又作麼生？」僧云：「適來向和尚道了也。」師云：「好對春風唱鷓鴣，是樹上語，樹下語？」僧無對，師便打。

He asked a monk, "Regarding Xiangyan's 'up a tree' case, how do you understand it?" The monk said, "Fine to sing 'The Partridge' facing the spring breeze." The Master said, "Tiger head." A senior monk stepped forward from the assembly and said, "Not asking about being up in the tree, please tell, Master, what about before climbing the tree?" The monk said, "Just now I have already told the Master." The Master said, "Is 'Fine to sing The Partridge facing the spring breeze' a phrase from up in the tree or a phrase from down under the tree?" The monk had no reply, and the Master struck him.
