When Yuanwu, Foyan, and Fojian were together under Wuzu, one day they said to one another, "The old master is simply dry and abrupt; he often cannot speak of mind or nature." They therefore requested instruction on the Buddha-body being unconditioned and not falling into numerical categories. Wuzu said, "It is like a pure mani jewel reflecting the five colors: the five colors are the numbers, and the mani jewel is the Buddha-body." Yuanwu said to the two elder monks, "He knows how to explain things on a grand scale. When we speak, how much effort do we expend? With just one or two sentences, he makes it utterly clear; he is a great tiger!" When Wuzu heard this, he said, "If one speaks of mind and nature, that is already foul speech." He also said, "A cat has the merit of smearing blood, and a tiger has the virtue of raising a corpse. This is what is called driving off the plowman's ox and snatching the starving person's food. If one is not like this, one is entirely a fellow playing with mud balls."
